Elisabeth Varnhagen Lugar

Originally from Detroit, I moved to California in 1994, after completing my M.A. in Media Management and producing two thirty minute dramas which had an international release and started working for The WB Television Network.

I left The WB to design puppets for a television show and pursue having children. I opened Crave The Design and continued designing puppets, teddy bears and gemstone jewelry. I am currently working on a line of children’s books to accompany my whimsical teddy bears. With an international presence, my work has been seen in magazines, retail stores and on the internet.

With more than fifteen years as a business professional, I have worked in media and client relations, education and real estate sales. Currently, I work for Assist-2-Sell as a Real Estate Agent in Central Indiana as well as creating my teddy bears and gemstone jewelry for Crave The Design.

Before working in real estate sales where I work on a multi-million dollar team selling residential real estate in Indiana, I worked at The WB Television Network as the FCC Communication Specialist and in client and account management for 95 television affiliates nationally. I have also taught and developed collegiate curriculum, and was involved in strategic consulting and brand development in the Los Angeles Market for a direct mail marketing start-up.

I graduated with a B.A. in Communication Studies from Taylor University and summa cum laude with a M.A. in Media Management from Regent University. In addition, I am the recipient of a recent writing award from Scriptapalooza.

I enjoy graphic design, keeping abreast of cutting edge Internet technology, designing websites, and artist teddy bears. My husband, Jack, and I are actively involved in our community and enjoy the arts, outdoor activities and raising our three children.

My inspiration for my teddy bears comes from a close encounter I had with three baby cubs when I was a little girl. I was in North Dakota on a summer family vacation when three baby cubs climbed on a car I was inside. They were the most beautiful creatures I had seen upclose and personal. Now, each one of my bears is inspired by a thought, an experience, or a spark in my imagination. I start from scratch and design and hand make every aspect of each bear you see on my site.

After the conception of an idea for one of my bears, I begin the design and ultimately transfer the design onto imported English or German mohair. The mohair is carefully selected based on color, texture, length and denseness. Each bear's face is hand sculpted featuring hand blown glass eyes and an embroidered nose. I spend a lot of time creating an original and inviting face and body. Although each bear is different, I always use scissors to sculpt the mohair and a needle to sculpt the nose and eyes. Then I position the ears which gives way to the personality and soul of the bear."

The bears you see are available for adoption.

They are collectibles and intended for children ages 14 and above.

"Tommy is a fun mohair bear perched atop a one of a kind diecast metal motocycle. I love to create bears , jewelry and take pictures of locations and nature."
